about

Following the loss of David Bowie, I found myself obsessively revisiting his music, filling my head with so much imagery of space travel and the universe. I had often imagined what an alien would make of how we live and treat our planet. I have been inspired by many children's stories such as The Lorax, by Dr Seuss, a genius with words and rhyme while still living plenty to the imagination. Clever and thought provoking, whilst so readable, I am such a fan.
We wanted this song to sound like it was set in space so we started off by layering very simple synth sounds to create some cosmic textures. Added to this there is the winding cello line (which you could perhaps feel represent the alien and the sadness he feels) and also the more unusual sound of the African Udu (an instrument that is made from a traditional water jug and contributes a distinctive heartbeat-style rhythm to the opening).

lyrics

Today I met a spaceman, who came down from the sky
And when I met that spaceman, I had to ask him why?
Why did he come so far and travel all this way?
He said, what he had to tell us couldn’t wait another day

He said that he’d been watching our planet now for years
And when he started speaking, his eyes filled with tears
He’d seen our planet slowly change from green to brown
Let’s hope it’s not too late, to turn it all round…he said

He said
Why are we tearing down our beautiful trees?
What are we doing to our rivers and seas?
We need more space for the children to play
Out of the shadows and the grey
He said
We must turn the clock back before it’s too late
Our planet needs help it just can’t wait
We must teach our children how to make
The whole world green again

If we care enough to make the world a better place
We have to change our ways, for the sake of the human race
We won’t give up and we must stand side by side
Today is the day, we must decide

He said
Why are we tearing down our beautiful trees?
What are we doing to our rivers and seas?
We need more space for the children to play
Out of the shadows and the grey
He said
We must turn the clock back before it’s too late
Our planet needs help it just can’t wait
We must teach our children how to make
The whole world green again

Today I met a spaceman who came down from the sky
And when I met that spaceman I had to ask him – why?
